OIL SPILL IN HUDSON RIVER WORSE THAN FIRST THOUGHT.(Local)

State environmental officials were expected to be back on the scene today of a major oil spill in the Hudson River near this Greene County town.

Though the diesel fuel spilled from a southbound barge Wednesday afternoon, officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation did not discover the severity of the accident until Thursday evening, according to Irwin King, an EnCon regional director.

King said the initial report received Wednesday was for about 200 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the river. Upon observation, however, EnCon officials realized the spill was much larger, he said.
