Qld: Almost half of women prisoners sexually abused
A study of female prisoners in Queensland has found almost half suffered sexual abuseas children.
The study says a third of them were severely abused when under the age of 10.
The research was done by the the University of Queensland and the state correctiveservices department.
A report co-author, Dr JAN CONNORS, says it's not surprising prisoners had been abused,but the extreme level of abuse wasn't expected.
The study interviewed 212 female prisoners, or 77 per cent of the state's female inmatesin March 2002.
